The Wrongness Of Diaper Cakes

baked ricotta and pine nuts 2.jpg
I am tempting you with my pretty petite casserole of ricotta, winter squash, and pine nuts.  Unforturnately for me, these pine nuts had already gone stale.  Not fully rancid yet but they tasted like old cupboard.  The lesson I learned here is to smell your nuts before using them.

I would like to take this moment to say that the whole "diaper cake" thing is just wrong on about 50 different levels of gross.  One level is just having to say "diaper cake" as in "Hey, isn't this diaper cake I made you uber cool with all the monkey decorations?"  Uh...no.  Not even if the diapers are cloth it isn't cool.  Why not make a diaper tower, or a diaper jackpot, or perhaps even a diaper sculpture?  Food and diapers have a very specific relationship and should never be  paired up in one mouthful.

On another thankfully completely different subject: the frogs are back!  They've been busy talking about the warm weather (50 degrees is pretty warm compared to 28!) and they seem interested in attracting some love action.  May they be plenty fruitful and keep us in frogs for a long time to come

Fell down on my new food efforts yesterday but won't today.  The downward spiral began with some Christmas candy I forgot about and then couldn't resist and usually all it takes is one faulty step and suddenly I'm slipping on banana peels all over the place.  Plus my back was out so I couldn't do anything active.

Well, I'm logging off of the computer for a while so I can attend to the very exciting prospect of getting ready to ride my bicycle to the grocery store.  You all have a great Wednesday.  And please: don't call it "hump day".  It's much worse than calling your spouse your "hubby".  (How many women enjoy being called "wifey"?)

Lisa:

I wouldn't have a problem being called wifey. Seriously. Not that I would love it, but it wouldn't bother me. I will continue to use hubby in certain applications, but not real life because it is handy. On Twitter, you have a certain number of characters and hubby is shorter than husband or even his real name. Also, some people don't really like to be out there in the public arena of a blog, even if there are only two loyal readers and it helps to preserve some of that privacy, so I will do that for my hubby. ;)

As long as you don't call Philip my hubby I don't care what you call yours. Though every time I read it it's a little like a sock in the eye but the great thing is that it keeps me fully awake when I'm reading. Hahahaha.

I would not like to be called wifey.

It's true that Philip might enjoy a little more anonymity but I believe he gave up all chance of that 16 years ago. If it's privacy one wants one should not marry a writer.

Luckily he's very good natured about people knowing his name.

Hmmm....I do actually enjoy being called "wifey" but maybe it's because the whole marriage thing is a rather late addition to our relationship and it seems so novel. And because we use these terms of endearment entirely in private and somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

In public, I'm still a little surprised whenever I'm introduced as his wife. And I'll never be Mrs. M--I kept my own name. (Not because I'm a 1970s feminist--although I am--but because when I married in my youth, I didn't just change my last name, I changed my entire name.)

applause applause applause!!!
1-UGH, I couldn't agree more regarding wifey and hubby...ick!

2- diaper cakes is just WRONG!

3- I cracked up over the sentence "smell your nuts before using them"...I won't bore you with my sexual humor :-)

Philip:

I say "veggie," though I never used to. I'm not a very casual person.

I can imagine being comfortable with "hubby," but I made a face just writing it.

Mostly we call each other "Dude." I think it started ironically, but irony always has the last laugh.

You know, before this post, I'd never even heard the term "diaper cake". I had to Google it. Having found out, I'm not sure I wanted to know. I can't understand why people indulge in such junk. It makes me shudder.

Oh Philip- it's so obvious why I married you dude!

MSS- seriously, I know! I wish I didn't know about them either but I encountered reference to them several times through my job and finally just had to say something.

Oh Kathy- the "smell your nuts" bit gives me joy every time I re-read it!

melody:

I love diaper cakes--creative way of giving a new mom (and her hubby)diapers. It's not only 100 percent usable, but serves as decorations at a baby shower. If properly done, a diaper cake doesn't contain "junk" such as wrapping paper which is usually thrown away. So what would be your preferred gift to give or receive at a shower?
