Always Make A Strong First Impression
This is a view of the city from the look-out area near Pike's Place Farmer's Market- I dressed nicely enough in the morning before heading off to the airport. I even wore a long lovely neck scarf and make up, but nothing makes me look shabbier than my dog's vomit smeared across my crisp black pants. Chick threw up a total of four times on the way to the airport. She doesn't like car travel. I tried to clean off the mess with a paper towel in the airport bathroom...but the towel left it's own distinctive smear of white fibers on top of the vomit. Nice.
- Paper Mate felt tip pens apparently don't like travelling either. I know this because while on the shuttle into the city I pulled out my trusty Paper Mate to make a few intelligent travel notes in bold black and my pen made a few notes all over my hands. When I attempted to wash the ink explosion off, it merely faded just enough to look like I always have ink stains on my hands like some kind of incompetent geek.
- When I arrived at my hotel it was too early to check in so I figured I would walk to the Fabric Trade Show and have a look around. I asked the hotel clerk how to get to the Seattle Center and she gave me directions to get to the Trade Convention Center which is ONE MILE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. That's alright, I mean, walking three miles on any given day right before making a professional appearance is healthy for a fat slob like me. Sweat does a body good and makes others take you more seriously...
Plus, when you add to all that that I'm a complete spaz...you get the picture. This was my first business trip ever and I don't think I presented myself in the traditional dour way that serious business people who want to make a strong first impression generally do. Screw that anyway! I could be the CEO of the Hilton empire (though I'd want to kill myself if I was) and I'd still act like a kid in a candy store. That's right, I do business my own way. If that means I don't approach my work with the traditional kind of heart-attack-producing-seriousness that is expected of saavy business people, it's alright with me if I live a little longer!
So I spent a shit-load of money on new fabric orders. I ordered a few more pin-up girl fabrics from Alexander Henry, some wonderful dots and flowers in a nineteen thirties style from Moda..plus a stunning fabric that took me by surprise: large orange mums on a chinese print style background that I want to cover my whole house in right now! From Timeless Treasures I will be getting a vintage style strawberry print and some wonderful masculine prints for my men's aprons. And from Kaufman I ordered cherry fabric, a great wine-themed print, and three bolts of fabulous bark cloth. I can't wait to get sewing!
